Question Description

Respond to the following scenario with your thoughts, ideas, and comments. Be substantive and clear, and use research to reinforce your ideas.

Mary Francis comes into your office later that morning.

“Good news! I think we’ve got strong potential investors!” Mary announces.
“That’s great!” you reply.
“And now, they are asking for financial information” Mary states.
“Ok, I could provide a 50-page analysis for them!” you say.
“That’s exactly what they don’t want. I’m beginning to notice that some of the investors don’t have a strong finance background, and the last thing we want to do is scare them off with too many financial figures” Mary explains. I would like for you to complete a presentation. However, I want you to keep it simple and clear. Using all 3 Financial Statements, please provide an analysis on Apex’s assets, liabilities, cash, and profit. As well, choose 2 additional components on each of the sheets, and provide your initial impression on the company financial situation. Do you think you could handle this?”
“Of course! I’ll get started on this right away.”

Mary also indicates that she would like between 10–15 slides with 150–200 words in the notes page. The presentation should cover the following:

Slide 1: Overview of Apex Printing, the company

Slides 2-4: Describe the 3 main company financial statements (the balance sheet, income statement and statement of cash flows)

Slides 5-6: The company’s total profit (How is profit measured? Why is it important? What are the profit levels for Apex for each year? What is the trend in profitability? Does the trend represent strengths or weaknesses?

Slides 7-8: The company’s cash flow from operating activities (Discuss how this differs from profit, indicating the distinction between cash and accrual basis. What is the relationship between Apex’s net income and Apex’s NCF operating activities?)

Slides 9-10: The company’s cash flow from investing (What are the primary sources and uses for these statements? What information about Apex can you learn from theses two parts?)

Slide 11: The case account (What is cash on a balance sheet? What happened to cash on Apex’s balance sheet? What does that indicate?)

Slide 12: The inventory account (What is inventory on a balance sheet? What happened to inventory on Apex’s balance sheet? What change does that indicate?)

Slide 13: The retained earnings account (What is retained earnings on a balance sheet? What happened to retained earnings on Apex’s balance sheet? What does the change indicate?)
