1. Compare and contrast the life of the Minoan Civilization (ca. 2000-1400 B.C.E) and the Mycenaean Civilization (ca. 1600-1200 B.CE.).

2. Give a brief summary of Aristotle’s Poetics. Why does Aristotle require the length of a play to be equivalent to the course of its plot in real life? How does “great error” figure in the plot of a tragedy?

Now it is time for you to be the philosopher! Answer these questions: What is Plato trying to convey in “The Allegory of the Cave“? How is it possible that people can believe in illusion and accept it as reality? The allegory presupposes that there is a distinction between appearances and reality. Do you agree? Why or why not? How would you relate “The Allegory of the Cave” to something that you have personally experienced?

4. What are the similarities between the first Olympic Games and The Olympics today? As always, feel free to use the Internet.

5. Describe Greek Drama in your own words. What did the theaters look like? What is the significance of Dionysus? Name four of the four playwrights.

6. After reading the excerpt from The Iliad in your reading answer the questions: How would you describe the personality of Achilles? How do Achilles and Gilgamesh compare as Epic heroes?

7. Choose one of the Greek Gods listed in the module. Explain why you chose this particular God. Do additional research on the Internet to find out more information on them. Upload an image of what they could have possibly looked like.

8. After reading the excerpt from Sophocles’ Antigone in your reading answer the questions: Who is the tragic figure in this place: Antigone or Creon? How does the play illustrate “heroic idealism” and the conflict between personal and communal obligations?
