Question Description

300 word response to the following question in part A and 2 100 word response to part B and C

Part A

What is anomie and how is it related to strain? How is anomie related to crime? Can you think of any real world examples (other than marijuana as we covered in lecture) that might have led people to experience anomie? In your opinion, is it even possible for certain groups of people experience more anomie than others? If so, how and why? If not, why not? Which groups do the theorists generally argue experience more anomie? Why? Do you agree or disagree? Without going into any specific or personal detail, do you think that you have ever experienced anomie? Did it affect your behavior? If so, how? If not, why not? In your opinion, is it possible to address societal anomie on a broader scale? If so, how? If not, why not?

Part B

an anomie basically describes a state of norm less with in society. I think it is related to strain because it causes a fast shift of moral values and standards which is when war and political upheaval occurs. Hence, why it is related to crime as well because there is no rules to maintain law crime is presented. In my opinion certain groups do experience more anomie due to class structure being more of a minority in society because minorities experience more strain because it is not as easy to achieve certain goals such as the American Dream or even get close to it. This is why many theorist argue that lower class minorities experience anomie than other people.

What I think about the assumption of hard determinism is that it can be right. American culture tells us that we should make a lot money to gain that American Dream which sometimes does not come true because of where we are placed at so people start to the opposite and sell drugs or commit robbery to gain that wealth to then get what they consider riches. If I had to pick which one is true to human nature it would be soft determinism because it can explain why theft/robbery and drug dealing is done and it is because those criminals want to live lavishly faster and don’t care about the consequences it come with.

I do find the theories revolving around why females offend less because it wasn’t up until the late 70’s and 80’s that women started to with drawl from that house wife role and have been placed at home to be the home maker for so long that females have not necessarily been able to commit crime as much as their male counterparts. I think that Strain & Anomie Theories are still “good” for now but further research should be done because females do still commit crime

Part C

An anomie is the result from the rapid shifting of moral values and standards. This usually happens when somebody gets depression and a subsequent lack of behavioral regulation. Anomie is related to crime because anomie can lead to lack of regulation that then leads to increased deviance, crime and can also cause other problems. Another real-world example that I can think of other than marijuana is the purchase of liquor. It’s somewhat similar but not in all countries is the drinking age the same. For instance, in some places, you only must be 18 years old to purchase liquor. I believe that certain groups of people experience more anomie than others. For example, those with an unstable household mentioned in lecture those with divorced parents might have a shift in values. One parent might have a set of values that differs from the other parent or even foster kids because they do not have a stable home and probably getting told by different individuals’ different values that they should believe in or act a certain way.

I think the assumption of soft determinism is very true because individuals have a choice whether or not to commit crime. It is more likely that someone in a lower-class steals because of desperation. Which is why I agree that the social environment and the conditions we live in makes it more likely to commit crime. For instance give those same people a lot of money so that they are now in a different social class the likelihood of crime also changes and it is more likely for them not to commit crime. I kind of agree with soft determinism more because I think circumstances make us act in a certain way. We might not want to steal but are put in the situation in order to feed our family.

When talked about the ability to explain why females commit less crimes I agree that is because they could sustain more pain. Men are more likely to give up quicker and result to stealing but in that sum situations I think women would do whatever they think necessary to keep their family safe. I could see why it would be difficult to explain female and male offending. I think we might have to leave those explanations to other theories because it difficult to explain.
